Not Another McDonald’s

Does the Bundaberg region need yet another McDonald’s? There are already four in the Bundaberg Regional council area, including the one at Childers.

Construction is well underway for a fifth McDonald’s adjacent Kepnock Town Centre.

Obesity, diabetes and other lifestyle diseases effect the people of Bundaberg. Another McDonald’s just adds salt to the wound.

McDonald’s is driven by corporate greed for ever increasing profits, its board and owners don’t care about the people of Bundaberg.

McDonald’s has received criticism on a variety of fronts. Firstly, it produces highly processed food with many McDonald’s items being high in sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats.

Fast food consumption, including McDonald’s, has been associated with rising obesity rates globally.

Then there is the low nutritional value with even seemingly “healthy” options (like salads or wraps) containing additives, preservatives or calorie-dense dressings.

On top of this there is the environmental impact including packaging waste. Despite some moves toward sustainability, McDonald’s generates a lot of single-use plastic and other waste.

Then there’s factory farming, McDonald’s has faced criticism for sourcing from suppliers that engage in inhumane treatment of animals.

As if all this wasn’t enough the fast-food giant offers low wages.

Bundaberg does not need, nor deserve, yet another McDonald’s.
